I wear ear plugs. You can sound proof your room, too. LIke buy those tiles designed for soundproofing walls or a less expensive method and often more beautiful, wall rugs.

You should go over to a friend's house during the time that the noise is at its noisiest. Do something productive, like homework, while you are there so it's not like a waste of time. After it settles down, you can go back home and put in ear plugs or bring the covers up to your ears. Tell your family about it too. You should not be losing sleep over this.

Dude you got it easy. I used to live by one of those raised platform trains in NYC. My third floor apartment was literally 7 or 8 feet away from the 1 train. To make matters worst my building was located in an area where the train bends/turns so you get that loud screeching sound and big blue sparks of electricity that light up the whole apt. On top of that the train used to come so fast that the whole freaking apt. shook almost like a 2 or 3.0 magnitute earthquake.
The rent was only 450 a month, but it was agony....lol
Get some earplugs dude, and one of those zorro blinds thing.
Sleep tight

The thing that I have found that works the best (I HATE ANY NOISE when Im trying to sleep) is turning on a big cheap box fan. You would not believe how much noise those things block out. It's amazing!!!
Also, make sure that the head of your bed is as far away from the hall as possible.

You dont sound rich...Sorry... so the white noise machine is a no no...Or double glazing doors or windows ....Counting sheep...think sexy thoughts ...maybe... Earplugs allow noise through the skull....Immersing youself in cushions sounds uncomfortable and hot maybe....Try a small massage motor. It will not only act as a lullaby but the vibrations in combination with all the above will keep you sleeping... Hope this helps...

Earplugs! Hearos, a California company, makes good earplugs rated to 33 dB. They are good at blocking talking and screeching noises but not rumbling noise.

Honey, I don't know your age, but if it were me and I could not get enough sleep, I would simply move to my own place. Then you control what goes on around you. I understand what you are saying because I grew up in a really big family that was totally dysfunctional. My advice is start looking for your own place of serenity!! Happy holidays!!!

Same problem here. I wear soft foam earplugs, with a high noise reducing rating, like 30-32. You can find them anywhere..Meijer, Walmart, etc. I can't sleep without them!!

Insulate your door with a door insulator or twisted towel at the bottom. Beleive it or not, your windows can help sound to come into your room from vibration. Put heavy (velvet? or layering) or insulating curtains (Heavy White-buy at Linen n Things). Then by placing fabric or paintings and furnture in your room, you can also insulate it from sound vibration.
