I heard many years ago there was a dogs dinner dance, they all hung up their tails in the cloakroom, unfortunately there was a fire and in the rush to get out they all grabbed the wrong tail, so now they are forever searching for their own tail?

Because they can't sniff their own!!!!!!!!!! ha,ha,ha,ha....... Sorry they do it to find out who each other is male/female friend/enemy dinner/not dinner, remember they can't speak to each other so butt sniffing is the only way forward on the doggie social scene. The whole dinner dance thing is cute though I'll tell the kids that should they ask the same ;¬)

I suppose licking their own private parts has a reasonable explanation too. They are filthy disgusting animals and they stink. People that keep them in their houses stink too. I can think of nothing more disgusting than having some animal lick it's backside and then come and lick the kids or whoever is nearest.
Oh but they're cleaner than humans and if everyone was like my doggy the world would be much better. Bollocks! Tell that to yourself the next time you walk through a pile of dog crap that some lazy owner couldn't be bothered to pick up.

Dogs gather a lot of information about each other through scent. The most concentrated area to find scent is around the anus and genitals. Its also a sign of trust when a dog allows another dog to sniff its rear. The rear end of the dog is vulnerable because its the furthest away from the teeth....

Dogs sniff each other's butts because there are scent glands back there that identify the dog. All it is is trying to figure out who is who. It has nothing to do with determining if the other dog is a boy or a girl.

Only me have you got a brain in your head or is it sawdust. Why oh why insult obese or overweight people. Do you realise that some obese or over weight people have a health problem, also sometimes what makes a person large are some types of medication (i.e. Steroids, etc) Think before you insult obese and over weight people.

They sniff eachother because they tell every dog apart by how they smell. They cant remember how they look, but since they have such a graet sense of smell thats how they remember everything.

Cuddly had it almost right.

1.That is how they determine the sex of the other dog .

2.They then remember the other animal and know if friend or foe

wouldn't it be great if we followed their example? You're walking down the beach, and you see a hot chick. You both run toward each other at top speed, circle each other a few times, then sniff each other's butts and run off together. Brilliant!

A large percentage of a dog's brain is wired for scent. They use it to identify who is who and other things. We use the other senses more. Sniffing their bums tells the dog exactly who that other dog is.
