My dog has been pregnant for a while. She's starting to produce milk, and I can visibly see the puppies kicking. How much longer would she stay pregnant for? Should I start keeping an eye on her? Will it happen in less than a week?

Hi, I'm a veterinary student and all you need to know is how long she has been pregnant. The gestation period for a dog is in the range of 60 to 65 days. She needs to be fed well. I don't know how you can see the dogs physically kicking. That is a little odd to me. The pups will probably be born within the next 4 to 6 days. You should have a resting place for her to have her pups. After the pups are born, you need to provide no care for 4 weeks. On the fifth week after birth, supplement dog food for pups instead of the mothers milk. she will not want provide them with the meal for very long. Once this occurs you need to have the pups receive immunizations. This needs to occur during the 6th week of life. I hope this helps you out.

I own a puppy myself and I would be furious if another dog attacked him. I might physically assault that dog as a means of protecting my puppy, but you can't justify abusing the dog after the initial threat has passed. You can't change what happened now and I think kicking the dog was a mistake and you shouldn't have done it, but the important thing is that you learn from the experience. If I were you, I'd make sure your puppy is never around your aunt's dog again, apologise to your aunt for kicking her dog (and perhaps later remind her that allowing her dog to do such a thing is not a display of responsible dog-ownership, and that she should take measures to prevent her dog turning violent again in the future- next time it could even be a child that it attacks), and try to practice being more composed about other dogs' behaviour. I know from experience that you'll need to learn how to stay calm and tolerant when it comes to both your own puppy and it's social (or anti-social) encounters with other animals, as long as your puppy is no longer in danger it's up to the other dog's owner to discipline their own dog for bad behaviour.

My Jack Russell just had pups five days ago. When I started to notice her nipples sweeling and becoming fuller and the babies were moving regularly(especially if you put just a slight pressure against them) it was only about 3 days befre she gave birth. They are suppoes to go 63 days but mine only went 59. If you have made her a place allready have the pups, watch for her to go there often. I bought a playpen for mine to birth in, and she never had much to do with it...even with her fluffy pillow in it. But the day befre she had them she spent the majority of her time there.

Dog gestational periods are from 56 to 60 days. If it's been over two months, I would probably go ahead and take her to the vet, just to see if she needs to be induced. Your vet will be more able to judge her condition and if it's time.
