Trust me, they wouldn't flip out if you said yes, they are trained to deal with that sort of stuff. they wouldn't cart you off to some insane asylem or anything, they'd talk to you about, what makes you feel that way and its totally confidencial what you tell them can not be said to friends or relatives, they'd only ever break the privacy conduct if it was urgantly life threatening say you told them that you were planning on jumping off a bridge that night. they'd probably contact someone about it.
But they'd keep it totally confidencial unless you gave them the idea that you were planning to carry it out. Most people get suicidal thoughts, they'd just talk to you about it.

Well they get nervous. I know from personal experience. They make you sign a contract that says you won't. Or you agree out loud. Of course when I said it in the past I never really intended to keep the contract. I am still alive because on 4 occasions I was found. the multiple other attempts just didn't work. I finally got the right combination of medicene and have been able to get therapy and have turned into a "normal acting" person. I will take medicene probably the rest of my life. At least I have one now. I must add that if you do not have money very little help is there. The government is a zero in helping people with severe depression.

I only really know about counselors, but there is probably something similar for doctors as well.
We have a pretty standard protocol and must ask all of our clients if they are suicidal, even if that is not what they came in for. There is a series of questions we can ask hem, in order to assess their suicidal potential (such as past attempts, having a plan, etc.). We are bound by our ethical code to do all that we can to prevent someone from committing suicide.
In addition, that is one of the few situations where a counselor may break client confidentiality and seek outside help and resources (of course, the client is told this before therapy even begins).

like socgirl I am a social worker as well, and she is pretty much on target. The person doing the intake is going to find out things such as previous attempts, If you have a plan or is it something you are thinking about. The idea is that if you have a detailed plan than you are an imminent danger. A licensed professional is required under Tara Soff to report when you are a danger to self and others and you can be held on a 73 hour hold.

Nothing much. They might ask some more questions about that time or those times. Maybe there was a good reason you felt suicidal. Maybe there is something that triggers those feelings.
They might suggest a little theropy to get the stress off your chest.
They might ask if it effects or prevents you to function. If your this articulate then you likely will say no so there won't be any worry.
The only times things get reported is if you attempt or if you babble about plans to attempt or real attempts online. Also posibly if you had certain plans they might alert your normal doctor and your normal doctor will adjust meds they prescibe so that they have addative to prevent you from over doseing.

I deal with this daily, since i am a clinical social worker and many of my clients have expressed having suicidal thoughts. For most clinicians, alerting someone is not necessary unless the client has a plan, the means to carry out the plan, and is seriously thinking about carrying out the plan. If this is the case, the client/patient would be admitted to a hospital on a 302 order (involuntary commitment) usually for a period of 72 hrs. to be evaluated.

I would say the answer depended on whether you feel you might actually do it. I have thought about it, as an intellectual examination of the act, but never from the standpoint that I would actually do it to myself, only from a curiousity standpoint. I know that I would never do it. So, because I have never thought about it from the standpoint of actually doing it to myself, I myself, would never tell a doctor that I had thought about it, because they would misread the answer and any attempt to clarify your response would only sound like you were making excuses. But, if you really have thought about doing it to yourself, then you should tell the doctor that because you do need help. Depression is not your fault. It is a miswiring in body. If you are depressed, don't be ashamed of it.

well actually when the ask you if you've been having suicidal thoughts it means have you been thinking of killling yourself or even kind of curious about it to ease some of the pain that you are going through, if you say yes they'll probably diagnose you wiht anti depressants or evauluate you to see if there is something going on more that just depression because there could also something like you could be a danger to yourself and others and it is a very lenghy process and they probably assign you a therapist which in my opion only works out if you are stressed out

They usually ask you why you feel like that and no they dont automaticly PUT you on anti-depresants they might try to force them on you but they dont prescribe them and say oh you have to take these. And the only time they would alert someone is if you were saying that when you left or something you were going to commit suicide other wise they wont.
