I have 2 cats and the older but still young male cat always hisses and growls at my younger female cat when he's playing with something. Other than that they always get along and play together, sleep together, etc...but when he finds something to play with its all growls and hisses...can a cat really be possesive and jealous?

it's not only being posessive and jealousness your male cat is trying to assert his Alpha Male status as the dominant cat in your house when it comes to playtoys this unfortunately will never pass because it's ingrained in the cat DNA makeup of each animal and there is really nothing you can do about it it sounds to me by what you've given in your question details like your male cat has gotten over most of the Alpha Dominant Male traits but the playtoy issue and there is really nothing you can do about it

Sorry if I told you something you didn't wanna hear but that is the way it is

Sure, a cat can be possessive of a toy! He can be saying to the other cat 'hey, I have this, don't even think about taking it'. Additionally, when cats live together, they develop a pecking order. It could be that this is the male's way of keeping himself on top of that pecking order, or conversely trying to get himself there if she's on the top. Cats are just funny that way. You are lucky they don't fight!

Possessive... especially if it's a male.

Male cats are very territorial, and he thinks the toy is his... if she were to come too close he may attack... he hisses to keep her away.
