Well, for one thing I think it is interesting that the biggest thing they expected from the Messiah was that he help them conquer Rome and now where is the head of his Church but in Rome, so in effect he did conquer Rome. But the main thing was that he was the sacrificial lamb spoken about ever since Abraham took his son up on the mountain to sacrifice him and God told him to stop because he would provide the sacrifice and Abraham didn't have to. Just about everything in the Old Testament points to the New Testament with Jesus and his Church.

Well the word messiah means savior. He had to go to the cross and yield up His life and be raised from the dead three days later.
There are other factors involved as well that are too numerous to mentioned here.

Oh wow, there are hundreds.

Well, as most scholars note, it is absolutely sure that those prophecies were written before hand. With myriads of dating techniques we KNOW that the Old Testament came before Jesus (Heck, the Dead Sea Scrolls alone, which any person of science accepts as having been written at least 100 years before the first century)

I could name just a few of the thousands that are in there:

A prophet greater than Moses would be raised up:

"Yahweh your God will raise up to you a prophet from the midst of you, of your brothers, like me. You shall listen to him." - Dueteronomy 18:15

It was said a virgin would give birth to him:

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." - Isaiah 7:14 (Jesus other name, was Immanuel, as shown in Matthew)

Born in Bethlehem:

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, being small among the clans of Judah, out of you one will come forth to me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting." - Micah 5:2

Cleanser of God's temple:

"Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, behold, he comes!" says Yahweh of Armies."- Malachi 3:1

Much of Psalm 22 as to the manner and situations involving his death:

"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?" - Psalm 22:1

"For dogs have surrounded me. A company of evildoers have enclosed me. Like a lion, they pin my hands and feet." - Psalm 22:16

"They divide my garments among them. They cast lots for my clothing." - Psalm 22:18

According to God the Father / Yahweh / Jehovah's will, through his suffering, he would offer his soul for others sins, and be cut off surrounded by criminals, though the "seed" (Genesis 3:15) would do this willingly.

"Yet it pleased Yahweh to bruise him. He has caused him to suffer. When you make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed. He shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Yahweh shall prosper in his hand.

After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light and be satisfied. My righteous servant will justify many by the knowledge of himself; and he will bear their iniquities.

Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors." - Isaiah 53:10-12

Even the dates, were told what year he would be annointed (his baptism). The Jews understood this prophecy of Daniel so well, that John records that the Jews were expecting the Messiah to appear that very year. Critics of the Bible, who DONT believe the prophecy understand that it is so specific, that they have tried to discredit Daniel as having been written after the fact. Unfortunately, the Dead Sea Scrolls proved them incorrect.

"Joseph of Arimathaea came, a highly respected member of the Council, who himself also was living in expectation of the Kingdom of God. He summoned up courage to go in to see Pilate and beg for the body of Jesus. - Mark 15:43

"As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ" - Luke 3:15

I could go into hundreds more. There are estimated to be at least * * 330 * * prophecies. Some Jesus could control, others were beyond his control.
