Yes you can - I pack a knife in my "checked" baggage all the time. However - as someone mentioned before - wrap it when you get to your destination, because if they open your bag, they will most likely unwrap it. They may even call you back to the ticket counter if it is wrapped.

Definitely do not wrap it. The TSA advises not wrapping any presents going in checked luggage. Also, do not put ANYTHING of value in your checked baggage. The TSA screeners have been known to have very sticky fingers, so if it has value carry it on if you can (but not weapons) or mail it.

You could bring it as long as it's in checked luggage but they might unwrap it on you, so you might want to mail it.

Yes, of course why wouldn't they want a knife on the air plain. I mean it's just a gift. Duh, mail it.
