1. Successful people don't talk about themselves.
2. Never say I'm sorry because when you say I'm sorry you give the other person control.

If you agree with number two.... what do you say in place of it? i have to agree that things like "how are you" and "i'm sorry" are said way too often without much sincerity.... but, what do you say in place of i'm sorry when you really truly are sorry?

1. Successful in what way? Wealthy, Socially?

People generally have one major area of interest - themselves - this is not just the arrogant or self obsessed. You spent all day around yourself and know yourself better than everyone else. Getting others to speak about themselves (or their interests) freely makes them more comfortable. The more pragmatic among you may also consider that listening to information about others and not 'showing your own cards' can sometimes be an advantage. Maybe your should rephrase to 'Successful people appear to be interested in what you are saying'.

2. Personally, I try to say what I mean, this has been know to upset others. I don't think that saying sorry gives away any 'control'. I prefer to clarify that I have my opinion and that I dont mean to upset anyone. I occasionally fall back on 'you're the one getting you upset - I'm just telling you what I think'. To summarise - Apologising should be a way to clear the air, not create further tension or animosity.

I disagree with both statements. Truly successful people have long ago learned the obvious benefits of self-promotion. Number two seems quite pathetic, the sort of thing that could only be uttered by a true control freak or social reject. Saying that you're sorry is an admission of honesty, and sometimes, it takes real integrity to say it. There's never anything wrong with saying you're sorry.

It depends on what you are sorry for. I won't apologize if I am right, no matter what the cost. Right is right. And for #1 if successful people didn't talk about themselves, we wouldn't have Oprah.

Successful people don't talk about themselves?? Try telling that to Terrell Owens and Barry Bonds. Oh, that's right...Bonds doesn't count...he's a cheater.

Number 1 isn't true, because modesty is on a contimum - you can be successful and still boast about yourself and be vein (e.g jose morinhio) or you can be quiet (Paul Scholes).
Number isnt very true either. their is no real answer, its opinion
