I am african-american and have very thick hair. I just had a baby so I am fighting the shedding. I wanted to give my hair a break from heat styling so I got braids. Once I took them out my hair was a matted mess. I got all the knots out...and a lot of my hair with it. I am now just trying to salvage whatever hair I have left...
it is so dry and brittle I am afraid to do anything to it. I do have to work tomorrow and would like to be presentable...any suggestions?

I have used creme of nature and a conditioner, which I left on for an hour with a plastic cap and wrapped a towel for heat. after rinsing I blow-dried it! Still sooo dry! I would love to go to a shop...but it is Sunday and I don't know of any open on Monday. My hair is too short for a pony tail, I have wigs but my hair is so puffy (last relaxer June- LONG time for me). I have KeraCare oil moisturizer w/ jojoba oil, profective Longnhealthy anti-breakage strengthening moisturizer, and doo gro medicated hair vitalizer anti-itch formula on hand. Which of these would be best to use and how should I use them now for the best result. Also, I love the look of braids and how they make it easy to get out the door...how can I prevent this from happening again or are braids just not good for hair?

Use a moisturizing shampoo like creme of nature or motions. Wash your hair and leave shampoo on your hair for 1-2 minutes then rinse, wash again paying attn to massage your scalp. Apply a deep conditioner, preferably re-constructor conditioner by Aphogee. Leave in your hair for 10-15 minutes, either wrap your hair in a warm towel, sit under a dryer if you have one, or put a plastic cap or shopping bag over your head. Rinse out and apply a leave in conditioner such as fantasia tea tree leave in or Aphogee or Ion. Comb your hair as straight as you can get it, then apply wrapping lotion to you hair. Comb again, if you can pull your hair back into a ponytail, apply light moisturizer if you don't want the grease build up and pull your hair back into a ponytail. Let your hair dry natural. Keep your hair pulled back as much as possible to illuminate stress to your hair.

DO NOT TRY TO PUT A PERM IN IT RIGHT NOW!!!! I know you didn't mention that, but some people make the mistake of doing it right after taking their braids out. Wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo like Cream of Nature/ or Silk Elements and afterwards deep condition with some Cholesterol Conditioner. If you have a hooded blower dry or bonnet, use that for added benefi to the conditioner. I would try to leave the conditioner on as long as possible. Then wash it halfway with lukewarm water and wash the rest out with cold to lock in the moisture. Put in a good leave-in conditioner in your hair and let it air-dry. Don't try adding anymore heat to your hair because right now it's already dry and heat will make it dryer. And for work I would try to do something simple so, again, you won't have to use heat. And keep taking the prenatal pills it will help to keep your hair healthy. Good luck.....

If you want your hair head to the shop. Your hair has los its structural integrity form the lack of conditioning while it was in the braids and, you have the added stress of the baby. In the future use braid spray to maintain your braids it will help with the matted mess and will keep your hair sort of strong....for now you should wash it and deeply condition it then give yourself a hot oil treatment and use a leave in conditioner...
