What's the point of having a boyfriend at that age? There isn't any. If a girl is pursuing a relationship at that age, it should be a warning to parents that the child needs to develop her own interests and build up her self-esteem through other means than by securing a boyfriend. Make sure she is having plenty of opportunities to pursue her interests.
If she doesn't have a hobby or particular interest, she should do something meaningful (such as charitable work), or take up some interest that could occupy her time (acting, horseback riding, model rocketry, etc..) You can't get too punitive ("I absolute forbid you to date") or she'll do it in secret. Instead, divert her and help her learn to develop her own interests and she'll be less likely to consider dating as the key activity of her life at this point.
It was always those girls who didn't have their own interests that chased after boys at that age when I was a girl. They made boys their "hobby" and many of them had nothing else in their lives. As such, they entered into long-term relationships not long after and found themselves without their own hobbies or interests in their adult lives.

Totally. When I was in 6th grade, I was not ever told or not told if I could have a boyfriend. As long as you tell the child that they CAN have one, they will feel a lot more comfortable. It's not like a relationship at their age can go very far, but they feel better if there is some way they can express their love towards one and another. Just having the title "girlfriend and boyfriend" will make it seem like their love is shown. If you do not let them, they will probably have boyfriends/girlfriends anyway, and those relationships might go a lot farther. They know that they are not going to tell you about "them" anyway, so why not do something bad? 6th Graders should DEFINITELY be allowed to have boyfriends!!!

take this from a young teacher, if you are the 6th grader and you were told that no you can't have a boyfriend, you'll propable end up having one by the end of the week, but I have been around this age for the last 3 years and I would tell you girls and boys in this age, around 11-12 and sometimes 10 don't mix up, because boys are still into hard playing and girls need to learn more, my opinion is you can have a friend but NOT a Boyfriend.

It really depends on the maturity of the 6th grader. For instance, when my older sister was in 6th grade she had a boyfriend, who is now her husband. But she was also a straight A student, involved in extra curricular activities, and was very mature for her age. So I think it really depends on the level of the childs maturity and what her parents think is best. Me personally, I know in 6th grade I wasn't mature so I am glad that my parents wouldnt allow me to date until I got into highschool.

Yeah why not? It shouldnt be anything serious, but a little harmless boyfriend/girlfriend relationship is usually nothing more than siiting together at lunch, writing notes, and meeting each other at the movies and/or the roller skating rink (with ALL of there other friends) and skating together during 'couple skate'. At least thats how it was when I was in 6th grade. lol

I had my 1st boyfriend in the summer of 6th grade. I think it is absolutly fine if you have certain restrictions. You may not agree with your restrictions now, but believe me, later you will.
Don't kiss the guy.....u will regret it. Hold hands, hug, talk on the phone, email, IM, hang out at school.....thats the stuff you should do.
In 6th grade a boyfriend is like a friend with a different title. (Oh ya, never say "I ♥ u"......it may seem kool @ the time, but you will regret it......TRUST ME.)
I am in 7th grade, and have my 2nd bf. I restrict myself a lot, b/c in my 1st relationship I got lost in it all, and wound up dumped and heartbroken.
Just be careful, but have fun!!!!!! :-)
Good Luck & Happy Holidays!

No way. Sixth graders are not mature enough to handle the things that comes along with a relationship. Its okay for them to like people of the opposite sex but a byfriend/girlfriend should be out of the question.

Honestly depends, Ask your 6th grader what it means to them to have a boyfriend or girlfriend.
The response we got from our daughter was that they sit together at lunch, call each other on he phone and hold hands.

Depends whether or not they are well enough educated on how not all relationships end up "happily ever after" and although she is only in 6th grade, she should know the dangers of sex... If her parents are comfortable with it than it should be okay. Good Luck!!

My friend and I both had a boyfriend in the 6th grade. Didn't last long for me or her though. Probably won't for her either. Let her have one. Probably wont get that romantic. If you suspect she is having sex or something might wanna check into it.
