"God can't exist or God wouldn't let people suffer," seems to be more of a misunderstanding of what God is than a logical deduction.

Clearly there are many reasons people follow religion and do not follow religion, so there is always the possibility that the reasons on both sides can be philosophically weak.

It is only a misunderstanding to you who has a clear idea of who you believe God is. For someone else that believes that if God existed, then things in this world would be better, then it's a logical argument.

You only see it as illogical because you have your vision of who God is.

I have a personal dislike for atheists who do not accept the possibility that a god exists just because he or she finds evidence that negates the claims of those who do believe in a god. I also have a dislike for religionists who believe in a god but think their concept of god is the one and only true way to spiritual truth Why should we limit the possibilities for and attributes of god just because he does or does not fit into our limited experiences in life. The answer is yes you can be an atheist or a believer for all the wrong reasons.

Yes, I spoke with some who does not believe in God any more because the lost their two sisters in a car accident. She said, if God exist, why did God allow my sisters to die. Most often suffering can be a factor that tends to turn people away from God. My suggestion would be to read the story of Job in the Bible. I hope that this would be helpful.

Those aren't the reasons people become atheist. Those are just some of the arguments that atheist use against religion. Not the best arguments to be sure, but,
"Wouldn't you rather have eternal life?" is not much of a rational argument for religion.

I agree. In my opinion, "God can't exist, because if there were a god, he wouldn't let people suffer" is right up there with "If we evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys around?". Both arguments reflect lazy attacks from people who should have done some honest exploration before posting.

"God can't exist or God wouldn't let people suffer" may be an argument against the biblical god, but not against any other kind of god.

I, for one, do not believe in god because I find no proof that it exists.
Not only that, but how does it change my life if it exists?
And, what if all of the current religions do not accurately depict what this god is?
Religion is pointless, so says me.

I don't think that's a reason that anyone is an atheist. More likely, they have found no compelling evidence to suggest the existence of a supreme know-it-all being who demands we worship it.

Yes. Most people are easily confused and rarely think clearly about complex questions.
