You didn't say where on your desktop.
the thump you refer to usually means you have a blocker (filter) set that prevents whatever it is from appearing. I have this occasionally happen when I click on Yahoo. Try holding down the "control" key when you click on whatever. With many programs that will allow you to bypass the filter for that program-that time.

verify your sound topic. administration panel > sounds and audio gadgets > sounds tab. interior this tab you may set the sound topic of your pc. Set on default in case you opt for the sounds to return to 'prevalent'
