I've given small gifts in past, ie. candy but don't want to waste money on stuff they don't want. Would rather give them the money I would have spend on a small gift. Would sending a small check be OK or is it too little an amount.

Money is a bit impersonal...better a small, thoughtful gift than a small amount of money to an adult.

You really are not obligated to send your sister-in-law's kids any kind of gift anyway, especially if they are grown. I'd see more of a desire to do so if they were kids...

I'd send a nice card and let that be that. People get carried away sometimes, when they cannot afford to, sending gifts to the kids of friends and relatives that are rather distant.

My gift-giving is immediate family (parent, siblings, sibling's kids) and my closest friends. Any gifts to other family members tends to be only those that I will be spending the holiday with (if an aunt or cousin were coming to visit, for example). Otherwise, other family members and friends get a nice card to let them know I'm thinking about them.

$15 is a very small amount for one kid and you say "kids". If times are hard for you and don't make no mistake about it, you give with your heart, not your pocket, still that would only buy something for one kid.
Maybe you could make them something or bake something for them. Homemade gifts are sometimes much better then bought gifts.

a $15 check does seem a little cheap, but I think it might be just because it's a check. Sending it in cash might make them seem like they got a little bit more.

I know when I used to babysit they would write me a check for $10-$15 and it would make me mad, but if they gave me cash I was fine. I dont know, maybe thats just me? lol I'm weird! haha

$15.00 is not to little in my eyes, it's not what you give that counts any way. If your still worried about it, why not get a gift card for $15.00 some where instead. it's a little more personable.
