well look at the champs in the ufc for help... sherk is a wrestler, st. pierre kind of all rounded but stornger on the floor and mean kicks, silva is the best muay tie fighter i have ever seen, chuck is an explosive hard hitting boxing sprawler, tito (sone to be lightheavyweight champ) ground and pounder, silvia is a strong heavy handed striker, cro cop (soon to come to ufc for the heavywight belt) striker mostly kicks... as you can seen you must first master all the fighting styles and be a well rounded fighter to go anywhere because your opponent will always be better at one of the fighting styles then you, and the biggest part is to find what you are better at then them and expose it... hope this helps maybe ill see you on tv one day follow your dreams!

Boxing is a good start, but you're gonna need a lot more than that.

The whole basis of Mixed Martial Arts is learning TWO or MORE (of ANY combination of, but preferrably a "standing game" discipline and a "ground game" discipline) discipline's to become a more well rounded fighter and it doesn't mean that they have to be a specific discipline to learn or have knowledge of to be considered a Mixed Martial Artist.

Muay Thai kickboxing (or at least Western Kickboxing) is a good BASIC discipline to begin with, but you also need some kind of ground fighting like Judo or Jujitsu or at the very least have a Wrestling background such as Greco-Roman.

the idea behind the MMA movement is that anyone with any fighting discipline background can enter the competition to fight, it's not narrowed down to specific disciplines.

Well the first problem with your question is the word "style", it's singular, look into plurals, such as "styles" For grappling, try judo, jujitsu, bjj, sambo, or wrestling. For striking, try boxing, kickboxing, muay thai kickboxing, jeet kun do (although grappling is incorperated into jeet kun do, it's less diverse and not as looked at.) Try one, then work your way to two martial arts at a time, then after a couple years add a third martial art, and make these your full time martial arts. Then finally, start going to mixed martial arts classes, because you will martial arts to mix together, but try to stay relatively diverse and able to hold your own anywhere and in any situation. Don't stop at three martial arts, just make them your full time martial arts and try out other ones occasionally for insight from different styles of fighting, i've done judo, boxing, kickboxing, and some kung fu, but then i started chatting with a muay thai kickboxer and a lot of concepts and way of looking at fighting are completely different. This is my advice, i will stop talking now.

Boxing would be good to teach to to fight in an enclosed area, I might also suggest wrestling, grappling, kickboxing, the more you can learn and adapt the better off you will be in a cage where you have no where to run.
