You are supposed to wash your hair before a perm and also trim any split ends.
Best thing to do would get a professional to do it. Chances are you're using the wrong product for your hair. Over the counter perms are better than they used to be but I wouldn't take a chance of ruining or losing my hair.

Nothing, the salons ALWAYS wash the hair BEFORE perming. The 1st person that answered your question is completely wrong.
*Had at least 10 perms and they Wash it before the perm Every Time.

Generally, your hair is best perm/relaxed when its all dry, having outgrown hair roots and a bit dirty; remembering that if u have lots of dry dandruffs then i will advise u wash your hair and wait 2 weeks after to perm hair; this is because the dry dandruffs tends to make your hair get burn much quicker. If u know u have a sensitive scalp irritating it/ scratching will make your scalp get burn easier.

You shouldn't wash your hair for at least a week before perming..... If you wash your hair then perm it it wont hold at all.
