Where I live, restaurants can refuse to serve alcohol (or food) to anyone they like. I have a friend who was refused a single glass of wine on her wedding anniversary because the waitstaff said they were not allowed to serve pregnant women. I know another woman who drank (a lot of) beer, and smoked cigarettes, in several bars, throughout her pregnancy, and to my knowledge no one ever refused her, or suggested she consider slowing down.

Some businesses might worry that they will be sued if a baby is born with a birth defect and refuse. Others may believe that it's the woman's decision to make.

There is actually no research showing that an occasional drink causes birth defects. It's a hot topic because there isn't clear information on the boundaries.

Best of Luck to you!

You know, my biological mom was an alcoholic and she probably most definitely drank, smoke and possibly did drugs while she was pregnant with me. Now, I am bipolar, ADHD, OCD, I have 3 vertebrae in my lower back fused together and 2 in my neck, thank God I wasn't born with 2 head and 4 legs. Any woman that wants to drink while she is pregnant shouldn't have gotten pregnant to begin with and when she has the baby should do the right thing and give it up for adoption. I almost would go so far as to say she should be put on birth control or made to be given a hysterectomy but I believe that a woman should have a choice in that matter... But drinking while you are pregnant, that's like prenatal abuse... Someone told me that someone she knows is pregnant and a smoker but didn't know she was pregnant until it was too late to stop smoking and her doctor says if she stops smoking the baby will go into shock... Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

They can refuse alcohol. I mean how would they know if she is still pregnant, or if shes just not a bigger person. I mean whos not to say that a woman gave birth a week before, and went out with her husband or friends or something, and had a drink. Shes still going to look like shes pregnant but shes not pregnant. So what should restraunts do, ask to see the birth pics of the child?

In some places they said "the costumer is always right" but in this part the restaurant is wrong. To me, a pregnant women even she smoke can hurt the baby but, if a restaurant serve alcohol to a pregnant women that restaurant should be sue because they don't think about the person they think about money.

No they can not refuse. The waitress or server could refuse but ultimately the mother can complain to higher management and will eventually end up being served.
How do we make this a law that you can't serve a pregnant woman alcohol. In order to do that we would have to admit that what is growing inside the mother is a baby and then what does that do to the abortion laws. It will never be a legal issue. Yes, it's a moral question, but nothing legal.

If they did have a rule that women who are pregnant could not drink, then you would have to ask every fat women who had a belly if she was pregnant before you served her alcohol. It would be a bad thing. Women need to make these decisions on their own, and not hold places of business responsible for their own choices.

That's not really true. Drinking excessively can "hurt the baby majorly" but there have been numerous studies that show an occasional drink doesn't cause any harm.

yes they can serve alcohol to pregnant women. If they want to drink and they're of age, its up to them. Morals and money don't mix, so if it comes between the resturant making money off you drinking or them giving a damn about your kid, they're gonna make the money. Its up to a parent to decide whether or not they want to harm the child, as bad as that sounds.

any establishment can refuse to serve anyone, but they have to have reason. I'm a bartender and have served a pregnant woman before. they can drink just like anyone else if they want to. besides, it's not like the lady came out to get drunk. she has a small glass of wine.

i'm afraid not. if the mother decides to drink then she has to face the consequences of her actions and fel guilty for the rest of her life.

one or two drinks a week shouldnt do any harm to the baby but i never drank throughout my pregnancy apart from a glass of wine on xmas day.

i think you are making a good point though i agree that reasturants, pubs and clubs should refuse this as well as shops. also cigarettes too they should be refused in theses places.
