if you mean the kind of nibbling that dogs will sometimes do to themselves when they're itchy, then don't worry about it. if he's whining and wagging his tail at the same time, it's probably just play behavior. when dogs do that to other dogs, it's to try to annoy them enough to chase them and play with them. it sounds like your pitbull just wants to play with you. since it hurts, you can yell, "OW!" or some other shrieking sound to let the dog know it hurts. dogs learn how to play nicely when their playmates yelp or cry out if it's gotten to rough. if you watch well-socialized dogs or puppies playing together, you will notice that when one of them yelps, the play pauses for a few moments. the other dog is figuring out that he needs to be more careful. you can apply this same behavior here. it's also used for teething puppies who want nothing more than to sink their teeth into you.

Dogs mouth each other for all sorts of reasons. Since it hurts, I was told to ignore the dog when they put their teeth on you, since your average dog adores his owner. They get the idea they've displeased you. Make the gap bigger by petting and praising him when he doesn't put his teeth on you. Eventually he'll figure out the affection ends when he bites you. Just don't hit him at any point because that may make him mistrust you. Hope it helps.

They do tend to do that. Not sure why. I look at it as love nibbles. Just tell him no sternly and love on him. My dog is so unorganized he steps on your foot even though he has four of his own. He is a big goof. Don't interprete it as aggression,. just love. Good Luck

Large head-strong breeds such as pit bulls and rottweilers should NEVER be allowed to play bite, "nibble", or play games such as tug-of-war. They can get out of hand too easily. If your dog tries this again, redirect his attention with an appropriate toy and praise him for playing with it and not you.
