I'm more-or-less dirt poor at the moment and I'm waiting until Thursday for my paycheck. I'm home sick and I was diagnosed with sinusitis. Unfortunately, I have a really bad sore throat and I have mucus draining down the back of my throat that is making me gag and vomit. I've tried drinking hot green tea, which helped for a little while. I don't have any lemons or honey and not a lot of seasonings/spices to choose from. I am so miserable right now, it's so not funny. Please help!

Amy...sorry you're feeling so rough. I'm a licenced speech language pathologist and I know a thing or two about the anatomy and physiology of the throat. I can't however diagnose you online and as always, a visit to your doctor if the problem continues would be best. Sinusitis is a bacterial infection, and antibiotics are usually prescribed to kill the infection...HOWEVER; in the mean time, follow most people's recommendations. Gargle with as hot as you can tolerate, heavily salted water 1/per hour. Try not to swallow much of the mixure as you don't want your tummy upset. It can be very uncomfortable with the combination of warm/hot water and salt, but most people report relief quickly. Also, remember that with an infection there are two things going on...swelling AND pain. If your throat feels swollen, ice-cold beverages, ice cream, etc will help reduce swelling....BUT, in order to heal any soft tissue damage, there needs to be increased blood flow to that area. Heat is what's needed for this. The gargle with warm/hot salt water and the sipping of warm teas or warmed apple juice or apple sauce will help with this. Keep an eye on your tempurature and if it elevated, I would consider going to the ER. Take care of yourself, and I hope this helped!

That's no fun! And I've been where you are.

Try gargling warm salt water to help with the sore throat, and steam from any source at all should help some with the mucus.

You say you don't have a whole lot of seasonings or spices. But if you have ginger, try adding a dash of that to your tea: That should help settle your stomach.

Feel better, and good luck!
