super: A very good question ! I'm a christian and this belief is a very incorrect one based on some bad theology ! The ol' "Health and Wealth" Gospel . A paradox in all of this is the fact, that people, who subscribe to this piece of bad theology, forget that within their own church, a third-world country for example, there are people who are Christians sharing the same God. These people are poor and have ailments like cancer, blindness, deaf, disabled etc., etc. ! Now; are these people, who praise God for "being good to them" any better Christians than the majority, who do not have wealth ? I think by now, you can see the contradiction in this bad theology. We live in a man-made system of commerce and opportunity is not always available to all people; therefore, wealth is a result of man's talents and skill which every human has different abilities to work with. I believe that God has given people different abilities. God does not play favourites !!! We all can't be brain surgeons for example. Good question you presented !

The Jewish culture, you can read of many incidents in the Bible about wealth acquired, as a blessing from God. Read Job or the story of Joseph two different way of looking at wealth.
Jesus didn't feel you needed it. He said it was easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle than a rich man to go to Heaven.
But he did eat with people that had money, he didn't condemn them he just wants them to share what they have with others. Misers don't seem to be heaven bound in anyones book.

They're right!!!

"To show that you are the children of your Father Who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the wicked and on the good, and makes the rain fall upon the upright and the wrongdoers." (Matthew 5:45)

But,

"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." (Matthew 19:24)

Jesus taught a man cannot serve two masters. You can't be a slave to money and material desires and serve God.

In the Bible it does say that the love of money is the root of all evil. I think Jesus said it, but don't quote me.
