Beagles are really good family dogs.
*They don't get very big
*They're good watch dogs
*They're short haired so don't tend to shed too much
*Low maintenance needed in the grooming department-No fancy haircuts or painted nails! LOL
*They're patient/low tempered---great for little ones! (ours didn't mind the occasional ear-pull!)
*They are not high-strung (once adult) so they wouldn't be the type to "jump" on everyone as soon as they walk in the door.
Basset Hounds are pretty good too, they have the same qualities and temperament. We had both and they were both great house dogs and wonderful around our daughter.

When you are talking about a dog for a 1 year old, then talking about a HUGE family with a rowdy nephew, you really need a larger dog. Small dogs just do NOT tolerate little kids well, they are fragile and MUCH more likely to bite when cornered than a large dog will.
Dachshunds are way too fragile to have a toddler carrying around, they are very prone to back problems and many of them I've met will become nasty little biters when treated badly.
Chihuahua's are the same way... fragile and likely to bite children. Ditto to Mini Pins.
I don't have anything against these breeds, just that they aren't always right for very young kids or rowdy kids.
Seriously, look into a Golden Retreiver, a mellow Lab, a Collie (they come in a smooth variety for those who don't want the hair issue) - something that has enough size to tolerate what a toddler can dish out, and enough brains to get up and walk away rather than use teeth.
My 2 nephews were raised with a Golden, and I can't imagine another dog being as good as Riley is. He taught them to walk (they grabbed his fur to steady themselves and he didn't so much as wince). My one nephew even stuck his finger into Riley's eye and all the dog did was whine and gently move his head out of reach.
Small dogs + kids = disaster waiting to happen

First, you are getting the dog for yourself, not for your daughter, so get what you want. The smaller poodles (not teacup, the next size up) can be good little dogs if you treat them like dogs (don't paint their nails, put bows in their hair, hand feed them and carry them everywhere...) They don't shed much, and are good with people when socialized (which means obedience classes, not just meeting people who come to your house). They do need regular grooming, and remember that you will also have to pay for shots and veterinary care, including spaying or neutering, for it to be a good family pet. Don't get the dog for yourself and then tell your daughter she is responsible for taking care of it. Get the dog you want, and take care of it!!

I think it is great that you are adding a dog to your growing family. Kids should grow up with dogs, no doubt about it.
I highly suggest a cocker spaniel. Great family dogs, sweet loving temperaments, and there are plenty in need of homes on www.petfinder.com, just search for your hometown and the breed.
They can be as small as 30 pounds and if you keep them groomed every 3 months or so, their coat stays soft and low-shedding.
Have fun searching:)

Basset hound - they are more playful then many think, yet also good dogs for relaxing with the family. They love to play outside and take walks, but they are also okay to miss a day if you are short on time. They are low to the ground, and so come across as small, without the annoying yappy-hyperness of many "toy" dogs. They are a wonderful breed!

Well small dogs are hard for young kids.
You have the be careful because if your daughter pick the dog up and drops him he can easily break his neck.
I would try a nice medium sized dog.
Maybe like a beagle they are too cute and have short hair!

If you're getting a dog for your 1 year old daughter, you're getting a dog for you. I would say a terrier of some sort, as they seem to be smart, active dogs for an active family and are always very playful. However, whatever kind of dog you end up getting, your daughter will grow to love it. Because you love it. :)

Well as your 1 year old daughter isn't going to be the one caring for the animal you should be looking at what kind of dog you can get yourself.

DON'T GET A DOG!!!!!
1 year old is way too young. get her a chia pet or a stuffed dog, just DON'T get her a real dog. i know someone who works at the paws, and she says there are so many dogs that are brought to the shelters because they were mean to children because the children pulled their tails and their ears or hurt them.
