Sonia,
The same question can be asked with all members of every "profession". While some professions such as physician may automatically elicit more respect by virtue of perceived intelligence and difficulty achieving that title, ultimately, the deciding factor in whether a person (whoever it is) is respected rests on his/her character, integrity, and work ethic.
In general nurses are respected. I've heard there are lazy nurses, but there are also lazy (fill in the blank). Most nurses have to be industrious to get through nursing school. It requires alot of time management and good study skills to study alot of material efficiently.
In a recent survey by a major poll, people stated they trusted nurses the most over physicians even. I think that indicates somthing about respect.
If you're stupid, you will be treated as such..especially, I would imagine, without good communication skills and promptness in carrying out tasks and physician's orders. Nursing is a profession. We live up to a certain image. Not all nurses can be categorized as [ ?]. Whatever goes in the blank is up to the individual nurse. But together the actions of many form an image and presently it is a positive image, which nurses try to protect as a profession.
Personally, I really respect nurses. I don't know of any other profession that requires so much--in terms of communication skills, multi-tasking, organization, assertiveness, integrity, character, and knowledge--and all in a time-pressed environment.

Nurses are highly respected. (The physician and patient who don't respect the nurse are idiots.) And on many days, I wish I'd become one.
They are, however, in the trenches. By that I mean that they get the dirty work (CNAs don't do all the dirty work. There aren't enough of them on the wards to do it all anymore.), in addition to some of the cerebral work (Who is the one who knows enough to call the physician in the middle of the night?). They also get to hold the patient's hand (literally and figuratively). As a cardiologist, I don't get to do that much.
A good doctor will freely admit how much the nursing staff taught him or her when he or she was an intern. I will!!

Nurses are highly respected. Sometimes, especially in surgery, they are yelled at or whatever by docs. However, this isn't generally personal, it's just a sign of the docs frustration at the situation, not them personally. Besides, how can someone who helps heal the sick not be respected?

If disrespect exists, it would have to be from certain doctors, and amazingly, I do believe there are a lot of doctors who have anger, attutude problems and a lack of professionalism
Nurses are highly respected by everyone with any brains.

Everyone seems to respect nurses. The only people that seem to mistreat them occasionally are the people who need them the most -- doctors.
