Because it is psychologically detrimental to lead a dependent lifestyle unless, of course, you are a child or disabled in someway. Everyone should be able to take care of themselves and not have to be totally dependent on another person(s) or the system. Help is OK, but not complete dependence. A person that has the confidence to lead a self sufficient lifestyle is a person who will be able to succeed in their life's endeavors.

That way you can be more sure of getting the things you need to do done. Not to mention there is a certain ammount of pride to be had in self-sufficiency.

There are other reasons too, but those are the big ones.

You cannot always count on people who are capable of helping you being around just when you need them. Often it is difficult to find good help and resources, so you might as well do things yourself and customize them to your own taste. It also saves a lot of money.

It is good for your self-esteem as well as for your intellect and personal development to learn to do many things. People often do not know what they are capable of learning to do until they have actually tried a particular skill.
