I am hoping to go to New York next month and have been trawling tripadvisor and other similar websites for advice. Please help! Is it worth paying around £550 each (5 days inc. flights) to stay somewhere like the Intercontinental or the Dream Hotel? Or is it wiser to spend closer to £400 at places like Astor on the Park, or Sohotel. I realise that we will be spending most of our time out and about, and the hotel should be little more than a place to rest our heads. However, it is a reasonably special occasion and it would be very disappointing to have to sleep somewhere horrible. For your info, £550 is about the max we would want to spend each. Any advice would be gratefully received. Location info would also be useful. As would any tips for good restaurants/ activities! We don't really know exactly where we would like to be, but certainly close to Central Park, Park Avenue and all the other cliched touristy places! Thank-you very much.

Well, I've stayed twice at the Milford Plaza at 8th Avenue and W45th Street. It's great and it's dead central for everything. You'll be halfway down Manhattan and in the middle of the Theatre District. I highly recommend it.

I'm going to NYC in February - we've booked our flights but haven't done the hotel yet - it may work out cheaper to do them separately. We've paid £267 each for our flight from Gatwick to Newark, flying with Continental - we've flown with them before and they were OK. As regards hotels, I've been looking at the Edison and the Skyline. I can get a room at the Edison for £250 each for 5 nights through thomas cook holidays. My biggest problem is finding a room with twin beds, I'm travelling with a girl friend, but if you're OK with a double bed, the Comfort Inn, Midtown looks good. One block from Times Square and includes continental breakfast. The Edison is also one block from Times Square. I also like the look of the Holiday Inn Express Fifth Avenue, about £650 for the room but again, it includes breakfast. Someone else has mentioned the Marriott Marquis, its a fab location - even if you don't stay there, go for cocktails at the revolving bar on the 42nd floor! The last time we went, we stayed at the Doubletree Metropolitan - wonderful hotel, great location for walking everywhere, smart modern rooms and they give you cookies when you check in! I love NYC, this will be my 5th trip there and can't wait. Hope you have a good time, feel free to email me if you want any more info.

I always use the Tripadvisor also, the user reviews are very helpful to figure out which hotels I would like to stay. Many also include helpful hints about the hotel and the area that it's in. From the ones that you mentioned, the Intercontinental is the nicer one and has the best location to midtown.
A good diner I found next to the Sofitel and the Algonquin (both great hotels) called the Red Flame, I believe, on w. 44th., good breakfast, not expensive. Try Trattoria DoPoTeatro; they have a nice price-fix pre theater menu, and it's a cute place; also on w.44th.

My personal choice would be either the Marriott Marquis or the Renaissance Times Square. Go to http://www.buddyandoscars.com/travel_family_vacation.htm and click on the JW Marriott link for location info, prices and availability. As far as restaurants, the 21 Club is a must. Use the same link above and scroll to the bottom of the same page for info on them.

60 Thompson is chic and peaceful (Soho area). Two things to think about in New York, virtually all hotels are w'out swimming pool (might not matter to you) and secondly - noise. Traffic noise/horns blaring can spoil your sleep very easily. We stayed in the meat packing district last year, not realising that this was clubland so we were treated to noisy club leavers between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. along with yellow cabs, fighting, horns, you name it!
