You turn yourself around, smile, don't say a thing, and walk away -- it is NOT worth it to try to say anything -- that will only inflame the person and you will be the recipient of even more of their rude, insulting ways.

I never lose my cool. And I come across alot of rude people, mostly when I am out with my terminally ill daughter. Seems people see my child and make uneducated judgements and even comments. At first I just looked at them and smiled but finally its gotten to me and I put them back into their place. However if they are just rude and it has nothing to do w my child I smile and walk away. Im to old for stupid ignorant people

I've found that the best way to handle a rude and insulting person is to just be quiet and allow them to make a complete fool of themselves. Eventually, they will end their "I'm an idiot" tirade, which will probably be your first opportunity to deal with them in a reasonable manner.

Maintain. Do not change by what they say and do. Dignity and class is tested when we meet these types. Silence is golden.

I would make some kind of comment about why this person needs to be so rude. Like, "Do you believe that I am that much of a threat to you that you have to say such awful things? In a way that's quite a compliment, thanks."

Let them be insulting, while you just smile politely. After they're done, walk away. Trust me, they'll feel like an idiot.

I usually give them a quizzical look like "did I hear that right?" but I don't say anything and then walk away.

Ignore them or just walk away in the middle of their tirade.

Say something like "sorry, I only argue with folks in my species."

Or,

"clearly, you're the first generation in your family to walk upright... so - can I get you a new club?"
