Simon Cowell thought so when a girl with a "mouthful of metal" auditioned for American Idol!

It should only affect your singing until you become accustomed to your braces.

Take it from someone who has had a retainer, braces for 5 years, another retainer, and now: a bite blocker. It may take weeks (or even a month or two) to adjust, but once you do you should be all right. I'm a music major-vocal concentration, and I go to all of my lessons, choirs, concerts, etc. with my bite blocker in. Occasionally it will affect my diction in a private lesson, but 9 times out of 10, it's something you can correct without worrying about your braces. Once I tried to blame a problem on my blocker. I took it out to try it again and - lo and behold - I still had the problem! So much for the scape goat... ^_^

One other thing: Be aware that, while changing from no braces to braces will take some time, when you get your braces removed it will also take time to readjust your mouth to singing with no braces. It's not the braces that's the problem. It's the change.

It will and it won't. The change of having a mouthful of metal is the hardest thing to get used to. Whatever you do, don't try to cover the braces with your lips because it will VERY NOTICEABLY affect your pronunciation. If you put your mind to it and know that you want to do a great job anyway, you can do it. Just believe in your abilitlies and don't doubt yourself.

If will initially affect your diction, but as long as you're not getting an appliance or expander (AKA anything on the roof of your mouth) your vocal resonance will remain the same. Anything on the roof of your mouth will change how your voice resonates, though.

Likewise, if you get a retainer after your braces, take it out to sing.
