if you own your own house & don't have small children :-) In CA (where I live) there are 10 dogs many homeowner insurance companies won't cover if they attacked another dog or neighbor etc. I owned a pit bull, best dog I ever had . . . but he got really cranky when I had my daughter, thus it was time to give him to a friend.

I have 3 pitbulls....2grown and 1 puppy. I am here to tell you that you have to have patience and time when deciding if you are going to allow this new puppy to be apart of your family. People misjudge pitbulls because of their reputation that owners have made them to be. If you get the puppy when its small, you can raise it the way that you want it to be.
Yes....get a pitbull.....it will be the best dog you ever gotten!

Sure, if you are getting one for the right reasons, can take proper care of it, and will either rescue or buy from a responsible breeder.
It's a big responsibility and you really should have experience with large or strong dogs before taking on a pit. You also need to be willing to spend a lot of time and money on training the dog correctly and on making sure the dog is properly entertained.
Do your research on the breed you are looking at (there are many types of dogs that fall under 'pit bull' headings); have the dog fixed as soon as s/he is old enough; don't have any other small animals; take good care of the dog by making it a family pet; and give it plenty of love and attention and you should be fine.

If you are a responsible dog owner than yes!!!!!!! Pitbulls are a great breed if treated with love and compasion! Pitbulls when they are older give you a sense of safety because most would give their life for you. Mine definetly would. If you have small children it might be good to have one. When I was born we had a pit and same with my brother. My brother was very rowdy so when my first one died we had to get another pit because if we had any other breed my brother might have hurt it bad. If you do get one make sure you get a female and please try and get it from the pound. Save a pit's life. I loved my pitbulls and they were my best friends.

YES!! I have a pitbull with some lab in her. She is the sweetest thing in the world! Pitbulls are so cool! If you treat them right, they will not be mean. I hate the Pitbull stereotypes. My doggie is a sweet heart, she loves everybody.
Oh also I want to add that they are amazing guard dogs. A burgler tried to get in through one of my windows and Athena (my dog) barked at him and he ran away because she looked so vicious. They are protective at the right times, and they will love all of your friends and family. As long as you like the person, she can tell, and she will like them as well

Only if you want to be a responsible dog owner. They are fantastic dogs when raised with love and attention. Don't listen to the eventual Pit Bull haters, they only see what they want to, and that's negative press. Ive been around Pit Bulls all my life, and they are without a doubt, the most loyal dogs you can get.
And Pit Bulls are also know as 'The childs nursemaid', because they were used for protcting children. I would trust a Pit before a Lab when it comes to kids.
Labs have the highest serious bite occurance of any other dog. Those aren't my facts, but the ASPCA's

A lot of people have awesome answers.
I have a 1YO male that i have had since he was a pup. He is by far, the best, most well behaved dog I, or my family, had.
But if you are not willing to be responsible for him/her and spay/neuter the dog and train the dog properly, then dont. There are too many bad owners out there that are ruining the breed for everyone.
If you adopt, please go to the local shelters (http://www.petfinder.com) and it might be easier on you to adopt one that is over 2. By then their temperment towards other dogs is set and they are considered mature. Plus, they would be housebroken!
Research, research, research!!! The number ONE GOLDEN RULE of pit bull ownership is...never trust your dog not to fight another dog! And understand the difference in dog agression vs human aggression. Just because a properly trained/handled pit bites another dog does not mean it will attack a baby or child.

If you're going to discipline it correctly and (very very important) exercise it at least an hour a day, then yes. if not, no. And if you don't do those things, don't go complaining when it goes mental. It's an animal, it has needs. The ones that go 'bad' more often than not do so because they're out of their mind with boredom, have no exercise and no discipline. Then they get tagged as bad dogs, when it's the owners who are bad.
Big commitment, don't enter into it lightly.

Be aware that the people around you, family, friends, and neighbors, may see the pitbull as a potentially dangerous animal. Do you want a dog that has that effect, or do you want something with a better reputation?
From time to time I read or hear about pitbulls that lose their cool and do terrible things. Personally I wouldn't want the guilt or the lawsuits.

if you have to ask then no. You will get mixed feelings about pits. I personally think there isnt a bad breed just bad owners. Just like any pip you will have to teach it good behaviors. take it to some classes and give it alot of love. But first find out if you can own one where you live and dont plan on moving and taking it because alot of places dont allow pits. I think they are beautiful dogs.

I would not recommend you buy one. You will have a hard time getting homeowners insurance due to pitbulls being an aggressive dog. A lot of cities are banning them. I live in Kansas City and most of the surrounding cities have some form of banning on them. If you rent a home most landlords will not allow aggressive breeds of dogs. If you have kids you might find that their friends will not be allowed over to your house for fear of harm. I am personally scared of dogs (bit by a chow) and to be honest I do not think I would allow my daughter over to a house with a pit bull (sorry but stereotypes work on me)
In other words it seems to be an uphill battle to own pit bulls now a days. God forbid you bought one and they did hurt someone how awful would you feel. Many would argue that any breed could attack but with a pit bull statistically you have a higher chance of this happening. It leaves you vulnerable to lawsuits.
