I heard that he said it would be impossible for the sun to be created on the fourth day, because the three prior days wouldn't have existed without the sun.

I don't know if Augustine critizesed a literal interpretation of the Bible but it makes sence not to take it all as literal. If it where to all be taken literally nothing would make sence.

Basically, he said that the Bible was about man's relationship with God and not a science book. Taking a literal interpretation of the Bible would risk making their faith look ridiculous. A forward thinking man but unfortunately most Christians do not agree with him.
