i have a pom that was hit by a car about 6 years ago, he has to be diapered and he has a wheelchair. He has notneeded pain meds thus far, and he acts comfortable and is so very happy. A freind from my rescue group called me when he came in, they were going to put him down eventhough he was happy and not in any pain. HIs only problem is that he needs much more care than a "normal" dog....
but the older he gets the more i wonder if i am doing the right thing for him, how do i know when it is time to let him go?

If you don't mind all the extra care and the dog is happy, I say go for it!! I know I could not give up my babies unless they were in severe pain or could not function the way there were a year or so ago. Since your baby is happy and still doing all the things he was for the past 6 years, than keep up the good work!!! I salute you for your valiant efforts, devotion, and love!! Good luck and God Bless you!!! DOGS RULE!!

If he's happy and not in pain, then let him live out the rest of his life. You knew that he needed "Much more care" than a non-injured dog when you got him, so now you have the responsibility to him until the end comes. Hopefully, he'll continue living for a long time and I'm sure you'll be able to keep him happy every step of the way! : )

As long as he's happy, you don't need to. When he starts experiencing severe pain that can't be controlled through meds is the time you should start considering it. If he's happy and in no pain, there's no need to consider it. Maybe as he gets older and can't get around much you might want to speak to your vet. I guess it depends on your dog's personality, and whether he is happy living life or not. You know your dog best - you'll know when the time comes.

As long as he is not in pain he should be okay. Dogs don't have the same kind of self awareness we do; i.e., they aren't bothered by blindness like we would.

My Scotty was so embarassed when he would poop in the house (now peeing he would do anywhere w/o a care in the world). When he got cancer, he was pain free but eventually it led to diarhea, which was depressing to him because he couldn't control it. The cancer was progressing still, but I knew it was his time because he was so sad because of the diarhea.

The vet said my dog would tell me when he was ready to be let go and I'm telling you the same. You'll know when your baby is ready.

If the dog is happy and not in pain, let him live.

It's never easy to let a well-loved pet go. But when he is in pain and he's not having fun any more- it is time.
