In medicine (neurology), the Babinski reflex or Babinski sign is a reflex that can identify diseases of the spinal cord and brain. It is more properly called the plantar reflex, as Babinski's sign in reality only refers to the pathological form. The
lateral side of the sole of the foot is rubbed with a blunt implement so as not to cause pain, discomfort or injury to the skin; the instrument is run from the heel along a curve to the metatarsal pads (pads below the toes). There are three responses possible:

1) Flexor: the toes curve inward and the foot everts; this is the response seen in healthy adults. (This is called a negative Babinski sign.)
2) Indifferent: there is no response.
3) Extensor: the hallux (large toe) extends upward, and the other toes fan out; Babinski's sign. This is a normal sign in infants until the ages of 1-2. (This is called a positive Babinski sign.)

Note. As the lesion responsible for the sign expands so does the area from which the upgoing toe sign (Babinski response) may be elicited. Babinski response is normal while asleep and after long periods of walking (such as soldiers' marching).
