I attended a concert of the Alleluia Ringers of Concordia University a few days ago, and I noticed that they wear gloves. Why?

Being as the bells are made of brass they tarnish easily. It also affects the pitch and tone...being as they are not cheap....best to safeguard them.

Aside from dot marring the finish of the bells as they handle them, it is tradition. Goes back to the Victorian times.

Because the oils on your hands will change the pitch and tone.
