Different animals, different sleeping patterns. My current dog, a little female Shepherd, sleeps on her side, and she's fallen off the bed in the middle of the night. You hear a loud, "THUNK!" and then a bleary-eyed dog glares at you over the edge of the bed like you pushed her off!
My first German shepherd slept on his back in his kennel with his legs stuck straight up in the air. So in the middle of the night, you'd hear "Tickety-tickety-tick, tickety-tickety-tick!" as he "ran" in his sleep against the roof of the Pet Porter. Nothing like the sound of dog toenails on plastic to improve your night's rest!
And our old Husky/shepherd cross slept in the floor of my closet on a pair of my purple pants that fell down on top of him one day. I guess he figured that they were a gift from Heaven because he'd never sleep anywhere else except on top of those slacks. He slept on his stomach with his tongue sticking out. . .between the pose and his choice of "bedding," it was a riot to see.
These animals of ours. . .they're so funny to have around!

Yes, pets do have sleeping patterns like humans. I have three dogs and my 11 month old lab will kick and moan, and stuff when he sleeps. You really need to get your cat on YOUR sleeping schedule. Don't let her sleep unless you are going to sleep. Play with her during the hours you are awake for like 2 weeks. Then she will be so tired that she only sleeps when you sleep and will be awake when you are. I had to do that with my lab, actually I adjusted to him and now he not only sleeps when I sleep, but because I had to let him out to pee 3-4 times a night, I know wake up 3-4 times a night and he is now outside! Another thing that my baby lab learned was when I turned out the lights and said goodnight...He knew I was going to sleep and he wouldn't try and stay up either. He knew he would have to wait until I woke up and cut the light on to get up! Animals are a whole lot smarter than people think. My lab knows that when he's in the bath and I show him a towel, he has my permission to get out and dry off! Anyway, hope that helps.

Alea, I believe they have different sleeping patterns. A cat is nocturnal and likes to prowl at night. They spend most of the day sleeping. Both of your pets sound totally normal. It may have a lot to do with the age as well because a kitten is like a tiny bundle of nerves on a heavy dose of caffeine. Best of health and love to you and your pets.

Absolutely, most cats sleep 20 hours and are awake 4 hours and that is between cat naps :)
Some cats can sleep stretched out and don't move a whisker while other seem to be chasing things in their sleep. I suppose they have dreams just like we do, of a sort.
Our dog was sound asleep on a pillow last night he fell over and was on his back, legs up and didn't move for hours. It was very funny.

Yes, almost identical to humans. They go through REM sleep and everything. Just like humans, they can go into a deep sleep and fall off furniture or not hear anyone approach, let alone shake them to stop them from snoring. My big dogs do the same thing as any sleeping human. Age does affect them as they usually sleep lighter or deep sleep for less time since their activity is less. You should think of them is fuzzy little micro humans when it comes to sleep. Good question!! DOGS RULE!!

Age. It affects us all. My old cat has routine time schedule for sleep. He sleeps in usual spots at certain times and then other times he sleeps in unusal areas.
