There are lots of risks involved. Getting nailed for software piracy or copyright infringement and picking up a nasty virus are the top ones, however.

If you use Avast! anti virus it has a specific P2P scanner. If it detects a problem then it will break the internet connection as the file tries to download.
Set Windows to show all file extensions and never download a file that ends .exe; thats an executable file. A file called 'music.mp3.exe' is not a music track, its a virus or trojan.
To make Windows show file extensions;
Open your 'my docs' folder and click Tools - Folder Options and then the View tab.
Make sure the box that says 'hide file extensions for known file types is unticked.
Click Apply then OK tosave your changes.
Use Winpatrol to stop it loading at startup.
You can set Limewire to run only when you choose to open it and run it from inside a sandbox. A sandbox is a virtual partition that gets wiped when you close it along with any files you download, inclucing viruses. Virus and trojan check all the files you download while they're in the sandbox. Drag any you want to keep on to the desktop before closing the sandbox.

Here you can find a good place where to download Limewire: http://bit.ly/1lOJZWn
Limewire is good software i still use it to this day. I really like Limewire, I'm actually an avid user of it. If I want to download a music file I use Limewire always. If you are looking for a good peer to peer software to download music, softwares/programs and videos you should get limewire too.
It's a safe and reliable pogram but like all peer to peer program you have to be careful of what you are donwloading from it. It does not matter what P2P program you use, you always have to be cautious about what you download.
Don't use torrents/downloads from other sites, they might be backdoored.

If i were you I would stay the Hell away from Limewire, it is just a big pile of viruses, try DC++, you do have to have something to share, but not very often you end up downloading viruses and the file you get are normally what they say they are, unlike LIMEWIRE

http://www.limewire.com/ is the most used free file sharing site. make sure you have anti virus running before swapping any files. the free edition of avg available from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ does a good job. once you have installed limewire do a search for limewire pro. then install this and delete the original. pro is faster.

Biggest risk is viruses, trojans and other malware. As long as you have a good antivirus and scan each downloaded file before opening you should be fine.
When downloading files that should not be executable such as music or video do not download any with a .exe extension this is probably 100% a virus.

You get a looooooooot of viruses (if u have a Windows). My friend downloaded like 100 things and got 800 viruses. But if you have a Mac. you're safe! It only has 8 known viruses and the're very, very, VERY hard to get!

Spyware and Viruses. Make sure you have a anti-virus program and it is up to date.
Also anything you download, save it in a folder. Scan it before opening it to be sure it is clean.
