Styptic powder is definitely the best with the flour or cornstarch option coming in second. If none of the above works, however, make the dog lay down and roll him over on his back.
Raise his paw above his head and press down hard with your finger on the bleeding nail. Hold him in that position (get help if you have it available and need it) until the bleeding stops. This may take a few minutes, so be prepared.
By raising the paw above his head, you're restricting the blood flow and making it possible for the nail end to clot.

Get some corn starch and put it on the wound - it will help stop the bleeding.
They make stuff called "Qwik-stop" that is specifically for that sort of thing, but corn starch will work in a pinch.
Basically what you did was you cut to the quick - the blood supply for the nail. It hurts, and you need to get the bleeding stopped, but it's usually not life-threatening.
Have you ever ripped a fingernail back so far that it bled? Basically the same thing.
When you trim your dog's nails, you need to be careful to only take off the tips, so you don't go back and cut the quick. But on a dog with black nails, it's sometimes very hard to know how far to cut - even professional groomers and vets still quick dogs on occasion.

Pack some flour or cornstarch into the end of the bleeding nail. It doesn't always work like the powder the vet has, but it usually works fairly well. You may need repeated applications, but just keep the dog calm and quiet for 15-20 minutes and everything should be just fine.
Don't you have black nails???

Clean the area immediately with hydrogen peroxide and alcohol. This happens to my daughter frequently. She also has a dachshund. They have tough nails and because they are so dark, it is hard to see the line. I would suggest letting a professional cut them, if you can.
Bless your heart. I know you were doing this to help your dog. Don't worry. Just keep washing it with alcohol and hydrogen peroxide to prevent infection. They will start licking the area anyway so the antibiotic ointment won't help much, and they will also bite the bandage off. One of the dachshunds caught her nail and it ripped off but healed by itself. Just use the precautionary steps to prevent infection.
I adore dachshunds. They are so smart and funny. I can point to a hole in the ground and Kassie starts digging with her little paws. She keeps sniffing the hole and will dig faster.

Light a candle and drop the wax on the end. It will hurt him but the vein you have cut can make him bleed to death if you don't stop it. The hot wax will stop it immediately. If you do it in the future, there is a powdery wax stuff vets use. Get that BEFORE you cut the nails again. Good LUCK!! DOGS RULE!!

you accidently cut the "quick" of the nail. If you do this, it will start to bleed, like your dogs did.
that happened to one of our dogs ,
you shouldn't be too worried, its no big deal,
just clean it off with paper towels or towels and it should be fine.
the quick of the nail is the white part you can see if you look underneath the nail. on some nails, its easy to see, but on otheres its kind of hard.
just be careful not to cut that far, or it can bleed again.
:-)

If you don't have any styptic powder, dab the nail with regular baking flour and that should stop the bleeding.

If you don't have the medical powder that stops bleeding, just dip the pups paw in flour to stop the bleeding.

yes cornstarch works well, but if you dont have any just run cold water over it a few minutes and that stops it too. quik-stop is the best. you can buy it at your favorite pet store.
