Acrylic is OK if your pal isn't going to actually USE the mug, ie if it's for decorative purpose only, or as a pen holder etc.
Hot water actually causes acrylic to wrinkle and peel off. Varnish will hold it on.......if it's not going to be used, even poster paints are durable enough under varnish.
but, if you actually want to use it- varnish won't wear well.
The best media to use is glass or ceramic paint, which can be bought in most Art supply/hobby shops(-I'd ask there about a ceramic varnish too- why not look in the yellow pages). It's not much more expensive than acrylics, but is WAY more durable. -sw

You can buy a paint your own mug kit on e bay for less than a fiver.
It comes with a mug and 4 paints, which you then bake in the oven.
They used to sell them in tesco as well, but not sure if they still do. Anyway follow this link below for ebay item.

i have an idea....look for the outline shapes that are used for glass painting, stick them to your mug, then paint with acrylic paint or glass paint if heat will be used.
My expertise is with the former so....Acrylic paint out of the tube is about the consistency of soft butter, but can be thinned with water, but l would avoid that, it dries really quick so don't let your brush dry out, acrylics are not easy until you get to 'know'them but then they will do all you ask and more.
as regards price a kit of acrylics costs about 4-6 squid.....a brush, get a slightly bigger one about 2 squid and the stick on shapes a guess but about 4 squid.. for five all avalable at The Range if you have one nearby....happy arting....

Loads of acrylic paints. I've tried it but it always turns out a bit sad. However I think you can download templates to stick on and paint over to look a bit better but it's still a bit sad.....Good for the kids I suppose.
