Kenneth, if there are ladies present for the meal, candlelight is the only acceptable form of lighting.

If you must use electic light, try and get indirect lighting. Overhead lighting is harsh and unattractive; instead spotlight artworks on your wall, get light to wash across the ceiling or put in loads of floor lamps.

It should be neither too high ,nor too low .70 cm. above from the dining table is much more romantic .

while there is no one single answer because of the various types of lights available, there should be ample room so as not to interfere with a centerpiece if you have one. also depending on how the light fixture sheds its light, it should not shine directly into someones eyes
