I'm Taiwanese who is learning Japanese. You know what? In Taiwan, English is the second language we have to learn, but Japanese is the third language we like to learn. Although Japanese grammar is different from Madarine, there are some kanji in Japanese. It helps us to learn.
I can't tell you which language is the best, but I can make comparison for you.
Japanese:
advantage: Japan the most advanced country in Asia. Have you ever been to Japan? It is very clean, everything is very fancy there, people are very polite.
disadvantage: can only used in Japan.
Chinese:
advantage: can used in Chinese, Taiwan and Singapore.
disadvantage: It is hard to learn.
I tell you that Japanese grammar is totally different from English. At least Madarine grammar have some grammar which is the same to Engish.
For example:
1.
English: I speak English.(S.V.O.)
Chinese: 我說英語。(S.V.O.)
Japanese: 僕は英語を言います。(S.O.V.)
2.
English: I gave you a present.
Chinese: 我給了你禮物。(structure is the same as English)
Japanese: 僕はあなたに プレゼントをあげました。(I you a present gave)It is a very
strange structure.
3.
English: I can read Koean.
Chinese: 我會讀韓文。(The same as English)
Japanese: 僕は韓国語を読むことがですます。(I Korean read can)It is confusing structure.
So if you want to learn Japanese, you have to adapt to much strange grammar.
Although Chinese grammar is not totally the same as English. At least there are 50percents are similar as English.
But Chinese word is the most difficult. Be patient to learn.
So far , I have only met European who can speak Chinese well but can't read Chinese even a basic word.

I could say that it quite is determined by the eating place. Keep in brain that a Japanese Restaurant is NOT a Chinese eating place. If it is reliable and run by means of Japanese humans they normally don't use the identical train of hiring each relative within the Universe to paintings there. Japan is the moment so much economically affluent nation on the earth so the incentive for them to escape to the U.S. isn't practically so satisfactory because it perhaps in different asian nations. Because of this it's truthfully alternatively infrequent to uncover genuine Japanese humans operating in Japanese eating places. Sometimes they'll insist on hiring simplest asians for the wait employees (within the curiosity of keeping the environment), however normally even those are Philipino, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese or any other asian nation that's NOT Japan. Having stated all of that nonetheless, the one truly manner you're going to uncover out if they'll rent you is to use.

Everyone is trying to learn Chinese because they think China will be the "big major power" and so knowing it will be vital to keeping a job in the business world.
Of course, they also said this of Japanese (what? five years ago), so I'm not running off to find a Chinese teacher anytime soon.
I'm happy with Japanese (and after already doing three years of it, I'm not about to just quit), though I will admit the anime and manga goons that so often surround the practice forums, my classroom, and such (no offense to you) annoy the hell out of me.

Try Chinese. It maybe easier to learn for westerns.
Do you know Dashan 大山? Guy's name is Mark Rowswell, he is a Canadian.
He studied Chinese at Toront Univ, and got a full scholarship to continue Chinese language studies at Peking University.
He must have done his homework very hard. I have seen him on TV screen many times when I was in China. His Chinese was perfect. Everybody in China knows him.

Japanese is much easier to learn because their symbols are syllable-like, they dont have sounds that you cannot hear like chinese, and its very pretty and rolls off the tongue.
