The brain is actually having a hallucination, the lack of oxygen causes the brain to shut down,the nervous system is one of the first things to be shut down so that is why there is no/little pain. then just fades to sleep.

The brain starts shutting down with the lack of oxygen. It's starts with the higher functions which among other things reduces perceptions of pain and clear thinking, which I guess you could call euphoria.

It would certainly be more sensible for it to trigger a pain response - as it can indeed be fatal.

When you hold your breath and feel the discomfort, it is NOt the lack of oxygen, it is the excess of CO2 that is the problem.

May be a way of making impending death feel less painful
