DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It is used to automatically supply IP address, Subnet Mask, Gatway, DNS, WINS and other IP related information to devices.

Suppose you have a network of 100 PCs. You might not want to go to every single PC and assign a static IP address. That will be too much work. So you will set those PCs to "obtain IP address automatically" in Network Configuration. This will cause the PC to look for a DHCP Server and ask it for an IP address.

Then will configure DHCP server with an available IP range either in your Windows 2003 Server or a Router/Firewall to supply those PCs with IP addresses automatically.

Generally it is a good idea to use an IP numbering scheme. For example for 192.168.0.X network, you might decide:

192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10 Servers
192.168.0.11 - 192.168.0.20 Network Printers
192.168.0.21 - 192.168.0.30 Static IP Workstations
192.168.0.31 - 192.168.0.100 DHCP Workstations
192.168.0.250 - 192.168.0.254 Routers/Switches etc.

You maintain above naming convention to keep your network organized.

I hope that helps with your homework.

A DHCP server assigns IP addresses to computers on the network.

Windows 2003 server has, as part of the package, a DHPC server. You must configure the DHCP server to assign the addresses to the workstations that make your system work.

If you're asking for help at this stage, then you're totally lost, and need to someone help you in person, or read the assignment, or drop the class.

a dhcp server is a server that gives the computers on its network an IP address. No you do not need a dhcp server because you can setup the network with static ip addresses. i would suggest having a dhcp server even if you have static IPs simply because it is easier to add temporary systems to the network, such is if you have a client come in from out of town. that being said for your permanent network i would use static ips. it is easier to maintain.
