i work for a collection company, who keeps lowering our wages. we are going on a "base pay" by january. how is this legal???

If you are in a union, your union should represent your interests and concerns in this matter. However, if your union is not strong then your may have a problem. Especially because you must may union dues. Unions can negotiate better around cutbacks and layoffs than an individual can. Of course, sometimes pay cuts is a solution in preventing layoffs. If you are a part of a union, talk to your president or chapter head.

If you are not in a union you must ask yourself, are there intangible assets you receive from the job? In other words, can you benefit more from your current job other than a paycheck? Are you part of projects? Are you managing people? Do you supervise accounts and other financial responsibilities? If the answer is yes, a pay cut may not be as bad (especially if it is a small one). Gaining valuable experience in those areas I asked would benefit your resume and give you an opportunity for a more prosperous employment.
