Dear Santa Clause,

This is the very first time I’ve ever written to you.

All my Christmases have been wonderful.
And you gave me lots of nice toys.

This year mommy says Christmas won’t be the same because …
well, Because my big bother Tommy won’t be here

Not too long ago Tommy was home in a green suit with great big gold buttons.

He looked like our mail man Mr. Dewey.

When Tommy was home I tried his shinny shoes on, they were so big Tommy laughed and he said “It takes a big man to fill those shoes”
Santa, I wonder what he meant by that.

I asked Tommy if he loved mommy, daddy and me, and you know what he said? He said he loved us very much.
And he loved his country too.
And that’s why he was going away.

Last week Mr. Dewey brought mommy a letter and made mommy cry.
I don’t like Mr. Dewey anymore.

When daddy came home, he cried too, and I never never saw my dad cry before.
Santa why were mommy and daddy crying ?
That took Tommy’s record player and things and put them in the attic.

Santa please don’t you be mad at me.
Mommy was when I played Tommy’s favorite record yesterday.
Tommy used to play one special record over and over and over.
A man was talking and said not what my country can do , what I can do..
Or – or something like that.

I asked what that meant
but he said It means a lot
But I’m too young to know.

Tommy has a girlfriend, her name is Kathy.
But she doesn’t come over anymore.
I wonder why ?

Santa, I like nice toys and things
And you can bring me some if you want to.
But please, please bring Tommy home for Christmas.
So mommy and daddy won’t cry anymore.
Ok? Santa ?
See ya and Tommy on Christmas.

Love,
Becky.

it's from the vietnam war era, and my mother played it for me on vinyl, it's sung in the voice of a little girl, and I think it's just as accurate in these fearful times of bush's war--do you agree?

How poignant! I've never heard it before, but can you tell me the name of it so I can try to find it? One of my fav's this time of year is "Christmas shoes". I don't know if you've ever heard it, but it has me blubbering almost every time I hear it. They even made a Christmas movie because of the song. SOB CITY!

That's sad. That poor little girl....

Anyway, try not to focus on the negative.

EDIT

Mexican Woman? Did you know that anti-war activists got troops pulled out of Vietnam before they were ready with their pacifist propaganda, saying that they could save millions? And then three months later, North Vietnam invaded and took control of South Vietnam and killed millions of people? That if the US would have stayed in, those people wouldn't be killed brutally and had their children slaughtered in front of their eyes? And that the pacifists ignored it after that, saying it was the pro-war people's fault, when it was actually theirs?

War is bad, but in some cases it is better than a giant massacre, because in war you can at least defend yourself.....

They still deny it to this day, so that's pretty sick.

From the wife and brother of Vietnam vets, I can tell you that their is not much harder than having someone you love far away at Christmas. Esp. in a war that has lost meaning to so many, except the people that are fighting it. And many vets fight the wars they were in long after they come home. So for Christmas, give the vets you know a hug and tell them you love them, and appreciate them.

Merry Christmas, from the wife of a wonderful man!

I can remember this song and yes " war is hell. " everyone who went through a war time in their lives can relate to losing someone, no matter which side one was on. my grandfather was WWI, my dad WWII, my brother was Korea and my time was Nam. if I would have had a son ( or grandson ) his time would have been now. when I think of the brave military personnel and police officers along with the firefighters who lay their lives on the line every day so we can enjoy our freedoms then the best Holiday we have is one in which we can honor those brave ladies and gentlemen who know best " all gave some and some gave all. "

This is not just "Bush's war". The entire congress, Republican, Democrat, Independent, all voted to help the Iraqi people be free of opression. Nobody knew at the time that forces within Iraq would fight so hard to keep themselves from being free.

It has a powerful message, but I don't think we need to be bringing all the anti war BS into the R&S section.

More people should take JFK's quote to heart.America would be alot better place(President and Politicians included).

That's very sad, but what makes you think this is Bush's war?

I guess you've conveniently forgotten that more than 3000 American civilians were killed on American soil while going about their daily American business. I guess you've conveniently forgotten that there are thousands of American families won't have their American loved ones with them this Christmas because of that. Thankfully, George W. Bush, our American President, has not forgotten.

Wow, that's very sad. Yes it's accurate for now. In fact, I assumed when I was reading it that it was written recently.

I completly agree, it really tears at your heart. Just reading the lyrics you wrote without even hearing the song really got under my skin. Its so sad how people's lives are torn apart by other peoples greed.

I don't have to be spiritual to appreciate a song written like that.

Wish I had a copy.

Thanks for sharing.
