Generally the problem is cause to the BODY TIME CLOCK.

Your body and mind has a time clock set, when you travel from time zone to time zone you are now change that time clock, example: New York to Bangkok the time change is 12 hours, what was day is now night the BODY TIME CLOCK is confused your mind says sleep the body says no. ALso the more sleep a person needs (ie: some need 8 to 10 hours, while some only 3 or 4 hours) it is harder for the 8 to 10 hours person to adjust.

Jet lag refers to the time zone difference. If you travel east, from the west, you are gaining hours, thus you will be up longer, and want to sleep later in the morning. Vise verse from east to west.

It's kinda like if you normally wake up at 8am, but then you have to start waking up at 5 am. That's a 3 hour difference, and say you're not able to fall asleep until the normal time you fall asleep, you'll be tired and cranky.

Usually due to being unable to adjust their body clock to match the local time. Usually difference in time zones that you travel to. Some adjust fast, some suffer a couple of days, but once your body adjusted to the local time, you are ok.

You can help your body adjust by using the destination time as guide for meals and nap, while in-flight. This will help condition you faster.
