1) Does it hurt? More of an achy feeling, especially when they change out your wires, and the best way to help is to take Advil before you go in.
2) Re: rubber bands: you won't have to worry about those for at least a year. When you get them, you'll understand it more. They aren't exactly fun to us, but you get over it quickly.
3) Spaces get your teeth ready for the back brackets. It feels like getting a popcorn kernal stuck in your teeth. Not bad at all. They just stick them in. They stuck mine in when I was there for a consultation. It's not really that big of a deal.

It doesn't hurt to get them on. It hurts the next day after they are adjusted once a month. The wire that connects through each brace is tightened ever so gently each month; the next day you feel pain in your entire jaw and need to take aspirins or Tylenol for the pain. Also, you are unable to eat solid food because you cannot chew due to the pain. This lasts for a day or so. The rubber bands are used to keep the wire in place and to help in the process of moving teeth more closer together. You will need to keep a very soft bristle toothbrush and paste in your purse so you can brush everytime you eat to avoid bad breath and to avoid getting cavities while you have them on. If you don't keep a good mouth hygiene and happen to get a cavity, it will wreak havoc on your progress with the braces because then the doctor would have to fix the cavity and could be forced to remove some of the braces to do the job.
Also remember to ask your dentist for a pack of wax. A small ball of wax is used to cover the ends of the braces where they may be brushing against the walls of the mouth and this may break the skin in some parts. Also you need to do is put a small amount of wax over them so that they will glide over the skin without breaking it. This happens when you are talking alot and also when teeth start to move after the monthly adjustment. They adjust the wire at the end of the last tooth on each side of the mouth; when the teeth start to move the wire at the end starts to stick out and can point into your skin. This should be cut off by your dentist, but if you can't get to the dentist in time, you can remedy it with a small ball of wax.
Spacers are small gray rubberbands that are placed between your teeth to make space for the braces that will be placed as a ring around each tooth. They don't hurt when placed in; it is like when you are eating something that gets stuck between your teeth. The next day your teeth hurt a little since they have been spaced apart due to the spacers.
The most important thing to remember is that you must keep a very good oral hygiene and do not miss your monthly appointments because it will just delay the timetable set for your total treatment to be done. Also, another positive thing about having braces is that it will help you lose weight. Why? Because after each monthly adjustment you will not be able to eat solid food for at least a day or two. They may suck during the whole treatment but look at the bright side: after they are taken off you will have the most beautiful and wonderful teeth you have ever seen. Good luck!

No it doesn't hurt to put them on but the next morning your mouth will feel like you were in a boxing match. Some people look cute when they have them. Spacer hurt like hell. That's the worse about braces. Its a real small rubber band they put between your molars to give space for the brackets. You should have them for a week or 10 days. I say take some Tylenol before you go and before you go to bed. Good Luck

well yes they do hurt you are moving your teeth around. they place a bracket on each tooth and then the rubber bands attach a wire to each bracket. it doesnt really suck to have them if your teeth need it. not sure about spacers never had them. i dreaded going to my ortho but i really didnt need them and long story short they made my teeth worse but for me it was a baby teeth still in and had them surgically removed after i was fully informed. if you want a straight smile get them and have some mild pain killers on hand. and follow the instructions after you get them off so that you will have a straight smile for the rest of your life.

well it will hurt for a few days because you teeth are adjusting to it and they will show you how to use the rubber bands...the thing is you can't drink soda, gum, sticky candy like caramel, and should carry a tooth brush and the special floss with you..because its not pleasant to have food stuck in your braces..other then that well hmm you get use to it....dont worry at least the end you will have straight teeth....good luck

its a long process...the rubber bands change your bite...they are put between the uppers and lowers to redirect the bite...also when the orthodontist tightens the wires it can be painful for a while...sometimes bad yes...but not excrutiating...head gear can be uncomfortable as well...
