I brought a new system today, but soon realised it didn't have a Operating System on it, DUH.
The current computer (old one before the one I brought today) I have has XP on is a disc borrowed from a friend who told me he doesn't use that one anymore as when they got a new pc, XP was already installed on it.
Shouldn't be a problem installing this again on my new PC? (I hope, once I get the disk off him) but my girlfriend wants my old PC as her parents currently have a pc with WIN 95 on it!
Can my girlfriend have my old PC, and will I have have any troubles installing it again?

It should be as many times as you want. If you have trouble then speak to Mircrosoft about it. Unless you are intstalling on differnet computers then you will be in trouble for not being original

Normally you can only install XP or any Microsoft disc once as there is a registration code, if the disc your friend gave you has been used to set up another computer then the registration code will have been used, if you install it into another computer, it will run but Microsoft will ask you to put in the registration code or it will stop after a month, when you do this Microsoft will see that the disc has been used once and will refuse your request, you may be lucky and get Microsoft to give you a new code but you will need to be a good talker, if it does come to that try telling them your computer got attacked by a virus , good luck,

XP offers one install per cd you buy. During that process of installing it on a second computer it will ask you for the product key which it will take but once installed and you gain access to the internet XP gives u only 30 days to activate it or it will shut down after that 30 days. Now without getting myself in trouble by publishing it here I could tell you by phone how to get around that or tell you what under Microsoft rules they allow you to RE-INSTALL this. They have rules that have to be followed but easy to follow and they allow you to re-install under certain circumstances. They will activate that software only if you do one little thing that takes a six minute call. jacky.mathews@sbcglobal.net

Well, you can physically install it, but if you want to be legal, dont install it. Most of the XP discs are bound to the machine you (or your friend) purchased it with. To be legal go out and buy a copy of WINXP.... If you built this PC(NEW), go back to the dealer and ask for an OEM copy of WIN XP.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but it is the right thing to do.

The full version of Windows XP Home is available on Amazon.com for under $200. Save yourself and your friend the trouble associated with pirating software and buy your own copy. If you don't want to shell out enough to get yourself a legal copy, look into switching to an operating system like SUSE Linux 10.0--it costs less than a quarter of what the full version of XP does.

windows xp can be installed as many times as you want, but your problem is that the machine is different to the machine it was originally installed on
as long as the guy you got it off is no longer using the copy of windows he is giving you, there wont be a problem, however if he has let anyone else use it there will be a mirror copy out there, and as soon as you try to activate windows microsoft will stop you as there is allready a copy with that product key receiving updates and downloads
so double check with your mate that no-one else has a version of his copy of xp and if they havent your o.k
if the copy has been activated more than 3 times you will need to activate by phone, but be careful on what you say to microsoft,
do not
1)tell them you have been given the copy of xp
2)its been used on another computer
do
3)tell them its your copy of xp
4)tell them you are re-installing xp due to a virus
basically just be on your guard with the guys at microsoft, they will try to catch you out, trust me its happened to me and now i buy all genuine microsoft products, its saves all the hassle
with regards to installing xp on your girlfriends p.c just check its got the basic specs to run xp(check this microsoft site .http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/sysreqs.mspx)
hopefully you should be ok and its then just a case of inserting the xp disc and it will autorun, and then you should click install windows xp and let it install xp
make sure you have the product key to hand before you start the installation, and when it says"press any key to boot from cd" after each restart, ignore this as thios is only a propmpt if you are installing it from a reboot, you shall be doing from the desktop method
the installation will take around 40 to 50 minutes and there will be a few questions midway through, just answer these and once the installation is finished you will be asked the users name ect and the desktop will appear
you should then install all drivers,anti-virus and anti-spyware,so make sure you have all these ready while the xo is installing ,this will save you running around looking for them when they are needed
when you are online various add-ons will appear to be installed by active-x,such as flash player, java runtime, and shockwave, just install these, they help certain websites to run
any problems with the installation just let me know and i can help you
good luck mate

No u wont have any troubles i assure u. U can install it as many times as u want, all your doing is redesigning the memory, and reformatting the code, and if u have a good PC u shouldnt have any problems with it.

be specific that the bios acknowledges the stress and that the jumpers and ribbon is desperate for universal grasp. be specific the ribbon is desperate to the 1st IDE channel. attempt booting from a floppy, consisting of a ninety 8 boot disk and doing an unconditional format: format c: /u Then attempt the installation lower back. If it fails then likelihood is that there is hardware incompatibility. you will choose greater modern-day stress.

No..pop that cd in and reboot the system and it will start the installation process for you, just answer the questions as you go. Make sure you have the original cd key for that cd, it should be on the cd sleeve, thats it.

you can install windows Xp as many times as you want (but i warn you, your serial # for windows xp can only be activated online only once, (afterwards you have to lie and say you had to restart your system) and yes, if you don't need it, give it over to her she'll like the computer
