i personally think those that search for an encounter with god can turn anything into an encounter, like say you are reading a verse with the word light in it, and suddenly the light in the room gets brighter... doesn't always equate to an encounter, could just mean that your mom turned on the light, but a lot of people looking for an encounter will say that god told your mother that you were struggling to read in an inadequately lit room and she came and turned on the light... (bad example I know) I honestly think it is all in how you perceive things to be. For those that are not looking for an encounter, even a true encounter will not appear to be one.

I had an encounter with Jesus one time. Seriously, I was in the sanctuary and a girl and I were dancing to Christian rock. We were actually attempting to drive Satan from the sanctuary by praising God and asking for his help in cleansing the church. It was in the middle of the day and this girl and I were running around the sanctuary praising God and all of a sudden I saw Jesus sitting on the stage larger than life. He was seated in a throne. He had a blue robe on and had both hands on the arms of the throne. He had long beautiful hair and was looking at me and laughing with joy. He looked at me like I was a little child and made me feel so loved, appreciated, wanted and needed. Then he disappeared

My partner and his sister has seen angels, my father saw Jesus, and I once saw the goddess Sophia. A curious mix!
As for signs I have had a few too. I was out walking in nature and was very upset when I was a teen. I was thinking of suicide actually. I had depression. I asked for a sign from God that everything would be ok. Suddenly the sky turned dark as though a storm was about to come. I started to walk home but I felt no rain on me though it was raining. Then everything stopped and I saw a double rainbow. Doesn't sound like much, but at the time it was very profound.
I was also in a bad time a couple years back, confused about religion (I had a fundie Christian boyfriend and felt like I couldn't be like that any longer. I am, I think, naturally Pagan). I walked home with my dog and my mother from beach and suddenly I almost tripped over something - a sparrow right under my feet on my driveway. It made no attempt to fly away though I had my big Boxer dog right there and I almost trod on it. It danced around me looking at me at let me even touch him! I heard 'hello' in my head as though nature was speaking to me reminding me of my real inner beliefs. But i was concerned about the sparrow and asked him if its wing was broken. just then, it flew away. :]

My heart beat had gone away and most probably I may have died, then at that time I prayed to God and he gave me a new life, a temporary pace maker was installed in my body for seven days and then I miraculously recovered. This is my encounter with God

For sure it won't nor it will ever happen to you, because you are a very skeptical person. and probably you are an atheist.
Here's the actual scenario, the automobile was invented and manufactured for a specific reason. You were given life definitely for a specific reason, otherwise your brain would just be a gray matter and would not function to reason out or make choices.
Why you won't or ever will qualify to see or converse with God if ever, depends entirely on your attitude and free will? The more you deny His existence, the more it will backfire on you. "He who spits to heaven, spits to himself!" Confucius.

No, because god is imaginary. An imaginary being cannot give signs or speak to anyone. People, however, are capable of imagining all sorts of things, including signs and encounters with non-existent entities.
People also will tend to see patterns where none exist (I learned that from "Numb3rs"!)

Yes, God has given many signs throughout my life.
The list is too long to put here... however the one sign that I will share is this one...
God showed me the way out of a very abusive marriage. I listened, I got out and never looked back.
God is with us each new day... I thank God for calling out my name and for me to listen to His calling to me to come to Him.

I think so. I have prayed out in nature; and asked for signs that would offer guidance, and I have noticed unusual things happen.
The wind stopped blowing, wild animals walked in 3-4 feet of where I stood as if I were invisible.
I think all of those were signs from the infinite.

G-d? History? I do not know. I just knew as I stood on top of Mt. Moriah, I belonged. I was walking where Abraham, Issac, and Ishmael had walked--and I was part of the ages. And, G-d has walked with us thru that history.
