Best adhesion can be achieved by doing the wall and its a lot quicker than playing with individual tiles. I have done the adhesive to tiles in the past and made sure there was good adhesion when pressing the tile home - no problem experienced.

I'm not a professional but we recently retiled our place and we tried it without adhesive at first and let me tell you the tile were still loose and sliding around. When we applied the adhesive and the nrelayed the tiles, they stuck with no problems or movement.
When you lay the adhesive be sure to rake it with one of those blades from homedepot on the same aisle as the tiles and let it dry for about 45minutes and then lay down the tiles, trust me. I just went through it.

Imagine the mess you would get into if you put the adhesive on each individual tile instead of the wall! You have to spread it onto the wall so that you can get an even, same height layer. It's easy to do.

To get an even bed so the tiles sit flat on the wall. but for a big tile butter the wall and tile. plus it would take ages to spread the adhesive on each tile!!!

I watched a bathroom being created on tv the other day and at the start of tiling the walls they actually did butter the tiles so that they would not obscure the pencil guide lines they had drawn on the wall.

I agree with most of these answers, its mainly a speed thing, its easier to spread an area, rather than individual tiles, also it does reduce the air pockets, which will stop the tiles cracking if they get knocked.

Its not you can do it to either, but if your not a pro its better to put it onto the wall nice and even so that you get straight tiles.

Good luck and dont fall asleep grouting afterwards

BECAUSE YOU WOULD GET AN UNEVEN SURFACE, AND IT IS EASIER TO MOVE THE LAYED TILE ABOUT WHEN THE WALL IS TREATED.
