A one year old dog is little more than a pubescent teenager. Would you expect a 13 year old human to be protective? Your dog may become more protective as it gets older. If not, you don't know how lucky you are. Protective dogs are a pain in the neck unless there is a credible threat. You will probably never be in a situation where you need to be protected by a dog. So most of it's protectiveness will just be annoying or dangerous. This mean it may bite someone (lawsuit) that is not really a threat. If you wanted protector you should have bought a trained guard-dog. What you did buy is a pet. If you do need a guard-dog you can have him trained (when he is older), or just thank your lucky stars that you have a dog with a friendly personality.

Well, if he barks when the doorbell rings that's a good sign.
You will be surprised how an animal can get protective. We had two dogs that were fine whenever people came to the house. On two occasions where they felt a threat, they did respond very assertively. Don't assume your dog is a wuss :) He will probably meet the challenge if needed. We had a german shepherd once too, they are the most beautiful, loving famly dogs (IMO).
Also, if your dog is friendly that means he was socialized well and that's a good sign. You wouldn't want a dog with a hair-trigger temper.

That might not be a good idea. My 3 year old German shepard is too protective. Only if she knows you is she nice. She doesnt care age, sex, or anything else. She bites first, asks later. Unfortunately because she is too aggressive we have to keep her pinned up if we arent home and in the house if we are because she is smart enough to jump the fence and chase somebody down. It has its good side that I know I'm safe from intruders but I know that none of the neighborhood kids can come get to know her unless she has a muzzle on. She is a very sweet dog but her protectiveness, especially of my husband has almost caused her to be put to sleep for biting a little kid. So be careful in what you wish for.

I was once had a mixed breed spotted dog of medium large size that was given to me because when he became an adult his townie owner thought he stunk to much to be a house pet anymore. My large fenced in yard seemed to be the answer and he could come in the house when he wanted 'cause it didn't bother me.
He didn't bother any thing, not the goats, the rabbits, the poultry, or people. He had basic obedience training and a few tricks when he came to live with me, but I never thought of him as protective.
One day I looked out the window and saw a strange man coming through the gate and he didn't close it behind him. I went out the door and started fussing at him for being an idiot (in the country rule one is if a gate is closed, you close it, if it's open you leave it open, the end.)
Any way, Blacky heard the tone of my voice and came flying around the side of the house teeth bared, hackles raised, aimed right at this man, not even barking or growling, all business. I shouted "down" and he dropped to his belly and looked at me for instructions. I called him to heel and he walked with me to find out what this poor terrified guy wanted (he wanted to know if I needed my grass cut and ask for the job.)
The protectiveness and territorial nature comes over time as your relationship builds. Just make sure you are top dog, pack leader. Your dog will be there for you when the time comes.

You probably don't have much of a choice in your dog's temperment. Be glad that you don't have a pet that might be a danger to innocent people or frightening to your friends. You want friends and relatives to feel welcome and safe around your pet, don't you? But you shouldn't underestimate your dog either. German shepherds can be very friendly and personable, and they might be quite protective of their master if they sense danger. But if you haven't been in that situation, it's really hard to say that he wouldn't be protective. People who get pets as a "tought guy" status symbol or to train them to be mean and agressive have some real problems and probably don't deserve the animals they have.

I'm not sure why you posted under Cats.... If you want a guard dog, you have to train him to be one, which means working with a good trainer, and understanding the liability you are creating. You have to be sure that he only attacks on command. For instance, you don't want him attacking friends or family when they come to visit. If you haven't done basic obedience and socialization, you have an uphill battle. Not only does he have to be trained to be aggressive when you want him to be, you have to train him to stop on command. And you might need to do some thinking about whether you want a pet or a weapon--it's difficult to have both in the same dog.

Dogs vary in personality as much as people do. You can't change his personality. You can make him more obedient, but not more protective.
Could it be that you're not giving him a reason to want to protect you?

Just one question do you know that German Shepperds are dogs? To answer your question you might try a training class.
