Somehow, the scandalous behavior of Bishops repeated sexual abuse of children in their care, can only lead to thinking along lines of a Religion meaning the exact opposite of Religion

I think it all leads to the misuse of the verses about sheep. That believers should be like sheep.

Sheep don't think for themselves, or use their brains much, or even seem to have much free will, or a will at all, except to follow.

Those verses were only meant to show that the believer should see himself as dependent on God. And that is totally different.

The Bible also says, "The kingdom of God is within you."

It was the political and economic stresses they were in at the time, following world war I. This overrode any religious concerns as i think these things always do.

People are more concerned with 'bread and butter' issues, than abstract ideas.

Well, the catholic church is Christian, but look at what they produce. That doesn't make every priest evil. You can't stereotype an entire nation, and expect everyone to act in one manner.

Actually in Germany, Hitler arrested priests and pastors who went against his decrees because they were causing uprisings. Hitler took over the churches and made them places where people worshipped the state, so to speak.

I'm not Christian but this is invalid, China is Atheist in general, but they practiced severe oppression in the past.
