Emerson is saying that books are a great resource but when they are not updated or are just reworked or recycled (like some current formulaic books today) they are bad for society. That's sort of the gist of it. Read more at the link below.

I would assume it's something along the lines of books being chocked full of knowledge no matter what shape they are in as long as they are still readable they are the best thing because in the blink of an eye you can even be in another state and city or even another world
