Doesn't that send a bad message? Or is fascism coming back now, and the church wanted to be ahead of the curve?

They're going back to their roots.
After all, the Catholic Church didn't do much to stop the Holocaust but indeed in some ways endorsed it. Hitler was Catholic, Mussolini was Catholic, and both were loyal to Rome, and Rome never told either one of them off even though Rome had the power to do so and perhaps have an impact on the course of history.

Honestly. What sends a worse message is the stupid things he says. Don't get me wrong - the last pope was an awesome guy and an exemplary leader, but this new one seems a very poor choice, if you ask me.

Peace!

PS - oh come on! In the middle of war and genocide the Pope comes out with his first words to the world and what does he condemn? Harry Potter movies? Are you kidding me?

Why don't you WRITE AND ASK = THEM, instead of posting you SILLIES, here on this Board?

(Proverbs 26:4-5) Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

(Pro 26:5) Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
