I donate to Kiva (Kiva.org) which is micro financing for poor third world countries. The loans are from about $300-2,000 dollars. People can donate in increments of $25.00 through Paypal). I would switch and donate to an organization in the USA in a heart beat. There would be one great obstacle with an organization in the USA - the loan amounts to start a business would be staggering. There are very few businesses you can start successfully under $100,000. Maybe someday.

yes. it could work everywhere. I interned under Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, BRAC and Proshika-all of whom use micro credit to help people. Giving to those who need it the most..and helping people structure a business rather than just money..will have a positive impact anywhere in the world-including USA.
